August YS Events

Friday, August 7th, 7:00pm – August Potluck

Sure to be another night of smiling faces, introductions, hearty laughs, and joyous moans of “OMG who made this?” our monthly potluck will be hosted by Steven Solis and Matt Veltkamp. And just when you’re thinking, “gosh these people are wonderful, I wish I could have a mutual spiritual experience with all of them,” we will deliver with the Spiritual Component of the night. Or I should say Mo Edjlali will deliver. Please bring a dish or beverage to share, and label contributions for meat, dairy, gluten, common allergens, GMOs, political donations of that particular company’s board, and the name of the cashier who checked you out (I’m obvi joking, but we should be more serious about labeling for meat, dairy, gluten, and common allergens…you know, for people’s safety and stuff). RSVP on Facebook and contact Bridget O’Brien with any questions.

Thursdays; Young Souls Book Club

The Young Souls book club meets Thursdays at 7:30pm.  August’s book is Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari.  Email Reeve at for more information.

Monday, August 10, 6:30pm – Young Souls Ideation Meeting

The Young Souls board will be meeting at Potters House at 1658 Columbia Rd NW to have an open brainstorm about different things Young Souls can do this year. Should we have our own Instagram?  Are we emailing you too much? How should we welcome more people to YS? Should we coordinate what color shirts we all wear to church (on Sundays, we wear pink)? Are these emails funny? Or Annoying? It is open to all so please come share your ideas, concerns, suggestions, and goals. And yes we called it an Ideation meeting because we like jargon. You can’t live in DC and not like jargon.

Monday, August 10, 8:00pm – Back to The Future on the Mall

Go back to 1985 to watch Marty McFly go back to 1955 in order to save 1985…and at some point someone goes Back to the Future. Join us on the National Lawn between 4th and 7th Streets, NW to see this classic film (the first one, not the one with the hoverboard, or the one in the West). Feel free to bring snacks and beverages! Don’t forget a blanket to sit on. We will meet in front of the Air and Space museum before heading to grab a spot on the lawn. Contact Jen DuMond for any more questions! You can also text/call her the night of the movie if you have trouble finding us! Here’s the facebook event

August 22nd – 23rd – Jubilee Anti-Racism Training

Do you wish to nurture your congregation’s multicultural future in the face of opposing cultural currents?  Do you wish to deepen your understanding of how race and ethnicity play out in our institutions and our daily lives? Jubilee Anti-Racism Training helps participants understand what is involved in nurturing a multicultural community and working against racism in all of its forms.  The workshop requires a weekend commitment, and it is worth every minute of that commitment. Learn more information by clicking here

Fee:  $150 per participant (includes cost for trainers, meals and materials).  Scholarships are available.  Contributions in support of this work are welcome.

When:  Friday, August 22 (6pm to 10pm); Saturday, August 23 (8:30am to 9pm); Sunday, August 24 (8:30am to 5pm)

Sunday, August 23rd, 12:00 PM – Brunch at Lou’s City Bar

Jealous of your posh friends who always seem to have brunch plans? Have a strong desire to respond to mom’s text with “I have to call you later, I’m at brunch”? … No? Is that just me? Well you should come to brunch anyway…After the service, meet the Young Souls in Pierce Hall to head over as a group. Or meet us at Lou’s City Bar (1400 Irving St NW, Washington, DC 20010) at 12:00 pm.  Lou’s is particularly fantastic at splitting checks, a non-negotiable factor in modern brunch etiquette. Please RSVP on Facebook to help us get a headcount.  Contact Cledwyn Jones with any questions.

Saturday, August 29th, 10:00 AM – The Beach at The National Building Museum

Ready to hit the beach this summer? What if that beach was a ball pit built in the National Building Museum’s atrium? We’ll be checking out this summer-only exhibit, featuring an ocean of 700,000 translucent plastic balls, a pier, beach-side snacks and more. Want to come along? Contact Cledwyn Jones for more information.

**T-Shirt Design Competition**

Call out to all our creative young soul extraordinars! We are having a T-Shirt design competition and would love to have some of you send your designs to us. You could send us a drawing, a photograph, or a design you create on a fancy computer program, etc. This is a shirt for young souls members so keep that in mind when designing! Once we have picked a design we will order the t-shirts and send out an email about how to buy and all that jazz. We would like these shirts to be ready by the November fall young souls retreat. We are asking you submit your design by August 31st to Bridget O’Brien. If you have any questions, please contact Bridget as well. We cannot wait to see your creative and beautiful designs!

Volunteers Needed

All Souls needs volunteers to help count the collection plate.  Counters meet after service and serve one Sunday each month or as a substitute. The time commitment is approximately 30 minutes.  Email Reeve for more information.
