2017 Young Souls January Events

Are you ready for 2017 to begin? Well get ready and mark your calendars, because there are a lot of Young Souls events happening in the new year!

Would you like to organize a Young Souls event? Send your idea to the Young Souls Board at

Friday, January 6th, 7pm – Young Souls January Potluck

Join us for our monthly Young Souls potluck! This is a fun way to start off the new year! Potlucks are held at a home of one of our members and is a great event for newcomers. Please bring a dish or drink to share with everyone. RSVP on Facebook here. Location: Vasu’s house (close to the Columbia Heights Metro). Please contact Alice with any questions!

January 8th-13th – Young Souls/BLM Partnership Warm Clothing Drive

Our partners with Black Lives Matter DC have requested assistance in donating winter clothing during this week. Please sign up here to help sort the items. If you are able, please donate clothing that is in good condition that is warm and/or waterproof. The goal is to disperse the items the week before the inaugural events so that it can be a fully participatory activity. Are you home and are there any clothes your family has lying around to donate as well? If you have any questions, contact Alice.

Wednesday, January 11th, 5:30pm – Young Souls Happy Hour

Join us for our fifth monthly Happy Hour! This is an excellent event for newcomers to attend and meet other Young Souls. Local 16 donates 10% of our checks back to All Souls. Location: Local 16 (1602 U St. NW). RSVP on Facebook here. For those interested, we’ll walk over to Vespers after the happy hour. Questions? Contact YS Social Chair Alice.

***Friday, January 13th, 6 PM until Sunday, January 15th at 5 PM – Jubilee Anti-Racism Training***

This is probably the singular most important thing you can put on your calendar, especially if you are concerned by the rhetoric that has been empowered by the recent presidential election. Several members and board members of Young Souls participated in this training in the Fall, and all came away feeling a renewed commitment to anti-racism and social justice. Although space is limited, we have a goal of getting as many Young Souls as possible registered for this training. The cost is $155 and worth every penny. There are scholarships available. To register for the training, you can go here: For general information on the training you may email Matt Bowen at For questions about the experience of this training, you may contact Ben Whelan-Morin.

January 15th-19th – Art of Dissent: Poster Creation & Distribution

A team of graphic designers has come together via the Young Souls SJTF affinity groups in order to create and display posters before January 20th. We need help with creating posters, reaching out to local street-level businesses who might hang the posters, and dispersing them. Our goal is to show solidarity with friends coming in from out of town and to spread a counter narrative of love and solidarity with oppressed communities (including good ol’ planet Earth). If you have even an hour of time during this week to help out, please contact Alice.

Wednesday, January 18th, 7:00 pm – Leadership Transition Finalization

Should only members of All Souls be able to vote for Young Souls board members?  Should anyone and everyone be able to be part of the Young Souls board? Join us as we finalize decisions to make our next leadership transition run smoothly and be part of the future of our organization!  For more information, contact YS Membership and Welcoming Chair Samantha Bertocchi.

Weekend of January 20th – 22nd – Women’s March and Inauguration Weekend

There are many events being scheduled for this weekend by the church, some TBD info in the works. Stayed tuned for official word on possible events that will be happening the entire weekend. That being said, the church is STILL VERY MUCH in need of housing for people coming into the area that weekend. To offer up a bed, couch, or floor space, please consider it.

Here is the official blurb:

All Souls is offering two kinds of accommodations for the March Weekend: the regular Bed & Breakfast Program and Couch-Surfing. If you can provide a bed, couch, or floor space for the March, please visit and let us know what you have to offer! You do not need to provide anything else besides accommodations. Guests will be asked to pay (through the church website) a sliding scale fee of $25-50 per person, per night to benefit the church. Hosts will receive an email when they have been paired with a guest(s). If you’re interested in joining the B&B program as host, which means offering guests a private room and breakfast with a 2-day minimum stay, please visit

Tuesday, Jan. 24th, 7pm Young Souls Artist Salon

Join creative Young Souls for an evening of creativity and entertainment! Share your artistic side by bringing a poem, short story, original song, visual art piece, or any other creative medium. This is a monthly safe space where we can enjoy each others work in an informal setting. You can share your art piece, receive feedback (if you would like), and talk about your creative endeavors with the group. Please bring your original art piece and something to eat or drink to share if you would like. If you’re interested in attending, contact Megan Calvert for location information or any other questions.

Saturday, January 28th, 3pm – 5pm – Young Souls/Souls in the Center Wine and Cheese Reception

Come and join Young Souls and Souls in the Center for an afternoon Wine and Cheese Reception! Please bring your favorite wine, crackers, and or cheese pairing to share. Location will be at the church, Room TBD. Please RSVP on Facebook here or to Ben Whelan-Morin.

Sunday, January 29th, 1pm – Young Souls January Brunch

Join us on Sunday January 29th at 1pm for our monthly Young Souls brunch! We’ll meet in Pierce Hall after the service and walk over as a group to brunch. Location: Acre 121 (1400 Irving St NW). RSVP on Facebook here. Questions? Contact the YS Social Chair, Alice Goldberg.

All Souls is creating a database to track participation in church events. Signing up for this database has numerous advantages for individuals (including easy access to church information, room requests, and calendars) and also for Young Souls (in showing the church just how active we are and utilizing it to track and organize things for our own purposes). Regardless of whether you are a member of the church or not, you are encouraged to create a profile on the database which can be found here:

If you have any questions, feel free to email Ben Whelan-Morin.

Young Souls January Circle Suppers

Sign up to attend Young Souls Circle Suppers here! Circle Suppers are small group dinners hosted by Young Souls to get to know each other in smaller settings. This month we have 12 Young Souls hosting! Circle Supper hosts will cook dinner for everyone or have the dinner potluck style (depending on the host’s preference). Questions? Contact YS Communications Chair, Justine Rothbart.

Young Souls Spiritual Engagement

Have questions on how to grow your individual or community-supported spiritual life or ideas on how Young Souls can better support you? We’ve got questions too, and we’d love to hear your ideas. Let’s talk them over together and put a couple into fruition. Contact Laura.
