Sunday, October 29th, After Second Service – Fall Ideation Meeting: YS Member Caucus
Topic Change: Young Souls Caucus! Your church space is the most local organized group where you can have the greatest impact, and the Young Souls makes up a significant portion of the population of our church. With the All Souls Annual Meeting coming up (12/9), the preceding budget meeting (11/12), and Church Council Steering Committee meetings gearing up for 2018, the Young Souls Board wants to be sure you are fully informed about how all of these meetings and policies affect you, the Young Souls, and our Church community. For the first hour or so, will explore the purpose of the annual meetings, what is discussed, what we as Young Souls want to see from the church leadership in 2018 and moving forward, and how we can engage to be a positive and helpful voice within our greater community. We will be joined by Rev. Rebecca Parker, Katie Loughary (AS Exec Director), and Jen Brunaeu (Church Officer, Membership Secretary). You do not have to be a member of the church to get a lot out of this discussion! During the second half of our ideation meeting, we make room for Young Souls open discussion and feedback for the YS Board. Questions? Contact the YS Board at email@example.com. Facebook event here.

Saturday, November 4th, 12-6pm – GOTV Canvassing
Come spend a few hours listening to what voters care about and encouraging them to vote in the November 7 statewide Virginia election. We are partnering with VOICE — Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement — as they work to increase voter turnout in traditionally low voting areas. Training will be provided. No experience or prior knowledge of local issues required. Before getting to work we will gather for food and fellowship at Bull Run Unitarian Universalist Church (BRUU).
Rob Hardies intends to join us, and we will make a push to get as large an All Souls turnout as possible. We’ll leave from All Souls at noon, have lunch at BRUU, canvass with VOICE from 2pm to 5pm (including training), then return to All Souls at about 6pm. We’ll need some vehicles so we can carpool. Register here.

Sunday, November 12th, After Second Service – All Souls Church Budget Meeting
Every year, the outcome of the All Souls Budget Meeting creates a budget that is presented to the congregation for approval at the Congregational Annual Meeting. It is very difficult, near impossible, to make changes to the budget outside of this meeting. If you are into auditing, process, and want to nerd out, come and get into the weeds of the 2018 church budget. While budgets are technical, there are moral implications associated with the way we spend money – use your voice to be sure our community is living up to our 7 Principles. Contact YS President, Alice Goldberg, or AS Executive Director, Katie Loughary with questions. Location: All Souls Church (ask the front desk).
Wednesday, November 15th, 6:30pm – Young Souls 7 Principles Discussion Group
Have you ever wanted to know more about the 7 Principles of Unitarian Universalism? Every third Wednesday of the month we will gather to discuss these 7 basic tenants of the Unitarian Universalist faith. We’ll talk about the actual language of the principle, historical UU perspectives, and our own experiences in relation to the month’s principle. On Wednesday, November 15th, we will cover the fifth principle: “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large”. Snacks and, friendship will be provided. All are welcome, and those who are either new to the community or excited about the faith are especially encouraged to come. Bring your curiosity and join us as we delve into this intentional exploration of UU beliefs! Location: Spirit Room @ All Souls Church, 1500 Harvard St NW, Washington, DC 20009. RSVP on Facebook here. Contact Nick Ford for more details or with any questions!
Saturday, November 18th, 9:30am-1pm – Reeb Voting Rights NC Redistricting Phone Bank
Join the Reeb Voting Rights Project to make calls on behalf of Democracy North Carolina and the Fair Maps campaign! Now that the courts have ruled that some of the North Carolina districts were illegally racially gerrymandered, the state will need to draw new districts. The Fair Maps campaign is trying to get 50,000 NC voters to support an independent commission that will respect community input and avoid racial or partisan gerrymandering – so the voters can pick their representatives, not the other way around. We will be calling potential supporters from lists developed by Democracy NC. Location: All Souls Church.
Thursday, November 16th, 6:30pm – Young Souls Social Justice Task Force Meeting

In November the Young Souls Book Club will read Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future by Martin Ford. “What are the jobs of the future? How many will there be? And who will have them? As technology continues to accelerate and machines begin taking care of themselves, fewer people will be necessary…Rise of the Robots is essential reading to understand what accelerating technology means for our economic prospects-not to mention those of our children-as well as for society as a whole.” YS Book Club meets every Thursday at 7:30pm. For more information, contact Lauren.
