Wednesday, January 3rd, 7pm-8:30pm – ResistanceBEATS Rehearsal
Join us on our bucket drums as we practice for upcoming actions! We meet every first Wednesday of the month; from 7-7:30pm we eat (bring something to share if you can), from 7:30-8:30pm we practice our cadences and choose upcoming events to support. Bring an action you want us to attend – we prioritize locally organized actions. Organizers are Mashaal, Alice G, and Alyson. If you need a bucket/supplies or of you have other questions. Friday, January 5th, 7pm – Young Souls January Potluck
Join us for our monthly Young Souls potluck! Potlucks are held at a home of one of our members and is a great event for newcomers. Please bring a dish or drink to share with everyone. Wednesday, January 10th, 5:30pm – Young Souls Happy Hour
Join us for our monthly happy hour! This is an excellent event for newcomers to attend and meet other Young Souls. Local 16 donates 10% of our checks back to All Souls. Friday, January 12th – Sunday, January 14th – Jubilee Anti-Racism Training
This training builds awareness of racism in our society and in ourselves. It’s strongly recommended for folks interested in leadership with in the church and organizations in general. Email Alice with questions. Register here.
Saturday, January 13th, 7pm – 7 Principles Discussion Weekend Edition!
Are you interested in the ongoing 7 Principles discussion groups, but haven’t had the time to attend? Well, weekend edition is back after the holidays! We are meeting for a second time on the weekend for the 7 Principles Discussion Group! The event will start around 7:00 in the evening and will be a potluck style dinner and conversation about Unitarian Universalist core beliefs. For this meeting we will focus on the Third Principle: Acceptance of one another, and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations. Location: 1002 Girard Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. Sunday, January 14th, 1pm – New Young Souls Com-pan-ioning
Do you still feel new to Young Souls and you’d like to get more connected? Well then this is an opportunity for you. Join us after the second service in Pierce Hall and we’ll decide as we assemble what we want to do together. Maybe we’ll get some treats from Sticky Fingers and take a walk around the neighborhood or choose a locale to cozy up for coffee, tea, or other drinks. Wednesday, January 17th, 6:30pm – Young Souls 7 Principles Discussion Group
Have you ever wanted to know more about the 7 Principles of Unitarian Universalism? Every third Wednesday of the month we will gather to discuss these 7 basic tenants of the Unitarian Universalist faith. We’ll talk about the actual language of the principle, historical UU perspectives, and our own experiences in relation to the month’s principle. On Wednesday, January 17th, we will cover the fifth principle: “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.” Snacks and, friendship will be provided. All are welcome, and those who are either new to the community or excited about the faith are especially encouraged to come. Likely Saturday Jan 27th, 9am-1pm – Full Church Council Meeting
Find out the strategic plan for the church and how to plug into the great initiatives planned for the coming years! Long-standing social justice committees will be featured so you learn about their history, there will be a centering discussion of the importance of incorporating anti-racism into all our work, and there will be round tables where you can meet the movers-and-shakers in our community. The church council is made up of lay leaders within the church from each committee and affinity group, and is an open discussion for all members of the church. Email Alice if you’d like to attend to see how best you can plug in.
Thursdays – Young Souls Book Club
In January the Young Souls Book Club will read The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. “The book follows events in the life of a concierge, Renée Michel, whose deliberately concealed intelligence is uncovered by an unstable but intellectually precocious girl named Paloma Josse. Paloma is the daughter of an upper-class family living in the upscale Parisian apartment building where Renée works.” “The Elegance of the Hedgehog is a moving, funny, atmospheric novel that exalts the quiet victories of the inconspicuous among us.” YS Book Club meets every Thursday at 7:30pm. February 16th – 19th – Winter Escape 2018!
Join us on the annual 4-day, 3-night fun-filled getaway for UU young adults (ages 18-35+) in the DC area. Winter Escape attendees typically come from All Souls, UUCA (Arlington), MVUC (Mount Vernon), River Road, Silver Spring, and other area congregations. This year’s retreat is at the beautiful Westmoreland State Park (VA) (the same location as WE ’17). The event will be held over President’s Day weekend. Young Souls Circle Suppers
In 2018 the Young Souls Circle Suppers will be organized quarterly. The next month for Circle Suppers will be in March!
