**This Saturday!** Saturday, September 29th – Young Souls Hike

Who’s sick of this rain and ready to go outside? This Saturday we’re going to head over to the Arboretum, and it’s supposed to be a lovely day! We’ll meet at 1 p.m. at the Rhode Island Avenue metro stop on the red line to walk over together. If you would rather take a bus or drive over to the park, email me and we’ll find a place to meet. Please bring a water bottle and shoes you like to walk in. RSVP on Facebook here. Questions? Contact Cora.

Friday, October 5th – Sunday, October 7th – Jubilee Anti-Racism Training

Do you wish to nurture your congregation’s multicultural future in the face of opposing cultural currents? Do you wish to deepen your understanding of how race and ethnicity play out in our institutions (including All Souls Church) and our daily lives? Jubilee Anti-Racism Training helps participants understand what is involved in nurturing a multicultural community and working against racism in all its forms. The workshop requires a weekend commitment (2.5 days); it is worth every minute of that commitment. The workshop is open to members of any Unitarian Universalist congregation, although All Souls members are particularly encouraged to participate. $160 per participant (includes cost for trainers, meals and materials). Contributions in support of this work are welcome. Fri., Oct. 5 (6–10 pm); Sat., Oct. 6 (9 am – 9 pm); Sun., Oct. 7 (8:30 am – 5 pm), All Souls Church. Register here.

Wednesday, October 10th, 5:30pm – Young Souls Happy Hour

Join us for our monthly happy hour! This is an excellent event for newcomers to attend and meet other Young Souls. Local 16 donates 10 percent of our checks back to All Souls. Location: Local 16 (1602 U St. NW). RSVP on Facebook here. For those interested, we’ll walk over to Vespers after the happy hour. Questions? Contact Cora.

Friday, October 12th, 7pm – Young Souls October Potluck

Join us for our monthly Young Souls potluck! Potlucks are held at a home of one of our members, and they are great events for newcomers. Please bring a dish or drink to share with everyone. RSVP on Facebook here. Hosted by Luciana! Location: check the YS listserv for address. Questions? Contact Cora.

Sunday, October 14th, 1pm – Young Souls Tour of the All Souls Archives

October is American Archives Month! In celebration of this month to raise awareness about archives and archivists, we’ll be taking a special behind-the-scenes tour of our own All Souls Archives. Did you know that the archives is located in the basement of All Souls? Want to learn about the rich history of All Souls? Click here to read about All Souls history and archives. We’ll meet in Pierce Hall after the service and head downstairs to the archives together. If you’re interested in learning more, come to this special American Archives Month tour of the All Souls Archives! Questions? Contact Justine. RSVP on Facebook here.

Tuesday, October 16th, 6pm – Young Souls Taco Tuesday

This is a new monthly Young Souls event – Taco Tuesday! Bandit Taco (1946 New Hampshire Ave NW) recently opened around the corner from our regular happy hour spot, so we thought this is a great opportunity to try their $2 taco tuesdays! Come talk to some YS board members, hang out, and eat tacos. RSVP on Facebook here. Questions? Contact Cora.

Sunday, October 21st, 1pm – Young Souls October Brunch

Join Young Souls after second service for a potluck-style brunch at the church. Stay tuned for more information on what you can bring. Room: TBD. RSVP on Facebook here. Questions? Contact Cora.

Wednesday, October 24th, 7pm – Many Voices Reading Group

Join the Many Voices Reading Group for a discussion of a short reading (and for socializing with some bookish people). We meet at Neil Manzullo’s apartment starting at 7pm. Feel free (but not obligated) to  bring snacks or drinks. Please RSVP to the Facebook event (or by email to Neil). The reading will be sent out via email in early October, and it will probably be Octavia Butler’s scif-fi story “Bloodchild,” about a world in which human men must bear the children of an alien race. Please note that October’s meeting will take place on a Wednesday, not the typical Thursday, and newcomers are very welcome!

Saturday, October 27, 1pm – Young Souls Hike

Join other Young Souls for an outdoor hike. Just bring a water bottle! Location: Rock Creek Park, meeting at the Cleveland Park metro station. Facebook event located here. Contact Cora with questions.

Young Souls Fall Retreat – Mark your calendars! – November 16th – 18th

Fall Retreat is a weekend getaway to the Shenandoah River Valley State Park. Join other Young Souls for a weekend of spirituality, community, and fun! Stalwarts and newbies alike can meet new friends and deepen current relationships. Keep an eye out for an email about registration. Questions? Contact Claire.

Registration and Scholarships for Jubilee Anti-Racism Training (deadline: September 15th!)

Hello Young Souls!

As you may have seen in other posts/emails, the Jubilee Anti-Racism Training is coming up from October 5-7th. This three day training, lead by members of the 8th Principle Task Force, offers a chance for All Souls congregants to learn what it takes to confront racism and do our part to build a welcoming, multicultural community. I plan to participate in this session, along with Abby (welcoming chair), Cora (social chair), Laura (spiritual chair), and Justine (communications chair). The training costs $160, but Young Souls has received a generous grant from the Beckner Fund to sponsor 10 people!
If you are able to participate, here’s what you need to do to register and apply for the scholarship:
  1. Fill out the Jubilee registration form:  https://tinyurl.com/jubileeoct2018 (very short)
    • If you are applying for a Young Souls Beckner Fund scholarship, select “Scholarship” in the drop down menu for cost. You will not need to submit any financial information.
    • If the cost of the training is not a barrier to your participation, you can submit payment at the same link.
  2. Email Paula Cole Jones (pcolejones@gmail.com), the coordinator for the training, to let her know that you applied for a Young Souls scholarship.
  3. Submit a google form to apply to the Young Souls Scholarship. Please apply by this Friday, September 15th, so that we have time to review applications! If you need more time, email me or reach out to Claire (claire.adrian.tucci@gmail.com) to let us know.
  4. Say you’re going and share the Facebook event! We hope to encourage many Young Souls to participate and help make our community a safe and transformative space for all our members. https://www.facebook.com/events/1931230500304134/
Feel free to reach out with questions! I hope to see you at the training!
<3,
Maia
YS Social Justice Co-Chair
P.S. If you’re interested in the training, but not available October 5th-7th, Jubilee typically happens 2-3 times a year depending on interest. Please let us know if you would like to participate, but are not able to make this training, so that we can share that interest with the 8th Principle Team!

Young Souls Survey

Hi everyone,

Happy Homecoming week! As we kick off the new church year, the Young Souls board wants to make sure that we’re serving the Young Souls community as best we can and fostering the kind of space you all want to be a part of. To help us achieve that, it would be fantastic if you could fill out the 2018 Young Souls Survey, found at this link: https://goo.gl/forms/nF8RRWgUeyNvKXbj1.
This survey will help guide Young Souls’ programming, focus, and spaces to help ensure that they are truly reflective and inclusive of the young adult population at All Souls. The board will be reviewing every response carefully to determine what we are doing well and what we could do better. This survey is anonymous, and your honest opinions are invaluable to the board as we strive to affirm and promote the seven principles within our community.
We will close the survey after two weeks, so if you would like to submit your feedback, please do so by midnight on Monday, September 24th. If you have any questions, feel free to email the board at youngsoulsboard@googlegroops.com.
Thank you so much for your help in steering the board, and we’re looking forward to continuing to build a beloved community in collaboration with you all.
Best,
Abby Jones
