Wednesday, June 5th, 7:00pm – 9:00pm – Proclaiming our Faith in RJ: Mobilizing the DC Faith Community for Reproductive Justice

Despite being the nation’s capital and our long stretch of economic growth, Washington, DC has some of the worst statistics of any major city related to reproductive justice. Far too many women of color, children, and youth aren’t getting the support and resources they need. Join the All Souls Reproductive Justice Initiative, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, The DC Abortion Fund, the Latin American Youth Center, and a panel of local advocates to learn about reproductive justice issues in DC including child care, maternal health, sex education, and access to abortion and discuss what we can do as activists and faith communities to make a difference. This event is the first step in our effort to build a DC network of faith-based activists for reproductive justice. All are welcome and refreshments will be provided! RSVP by visiting: http://bit.ly/DCforRJ. Location: All Souls Church Unitarian 1500 Harvard St. NW. Questions? Contact Danielle Garrett at laurendgarrett@gmail.com. Learn more about the All Souls Reproductive Justice Initiative here.

Each month, the Many Voices Reading Group discusses a short story, and during April we’ll talk about Nick White’s “Lady Tiger.” White writes lovely Southern gothic stories, often about queer men in the South. On one level, “Lady Tiger” is about Rusty and his crush on a high school softball team’s new coach, who quotes Shakespeare and loves tofu. But it’s also about how Rusty, and others on the team, are dealing with what happened before the story began: Rusty’s father abandoning Rusty and acting inappropriately with a team member.

The story is available here and an audio version is available from Audible. Please RSVP here or by email to  Neil, just so we have a sense of how many people are coming. We’ll meet at Neil’s place. Feel free (but not obligated) to bring snacks/drinks, and newcomers are always welcome!

It’s weird. It’s fun. It’s dark. And it’s available here (including in audio form) or if you’ve run out of New Yorker clicks, you can find it here. An interview with the author is available here. We’ll meet at Neil’s place (check the YS listserv for address) unless we outgrow the space. Feel free (but not obligated) to bring snacks/drinks. We’ll meet in Pierce Hall after the second service (look for someone holding a large Young Souls sign, or text Abby at 203-605-4704 to find the group) and decide as a group what we’d like to do. Depending on the weather, the group size, the group interest, etc., options could include – getting ice cream, taking a walk around Meridian Hill Park, heading to Karma Kitchen for some delicious pay-as-you-can Indian food, or any other ideas the group brings. Hope to see you there! RSVP on Facebook here. Questions? Contact Abby.
